HOUSING CONSTRUCTION IN THE PROVINCE OF GIRONA REACHES THE BEST FIRST HALF OF THE YEAR IN 15 YEARS

Between January and June 2025, the Architects’ Association (COAC) approved 1,507 new homes, the highest figure in the last fifteen years, with a 21.5% increase compared to the same period in 2024.

Five major residential projects stand out: three with over 5,000 m² (in Girona, Lloret, and Figueres) and two with over 10,000 m² (in Vilablareix and Platja d’Aro). Of these homes, 259 are social housing, accounting for 17.2% of the total.

By county

  • Pla de l’Estany grows by +112%

  • La Selva records +84%

  • In contrast, La Garrotxa decreases by -57.6%

Baix Empordà (406 approved) and Gironès (389 approved) are the most active.

Global figures and challenges: new construction versus renovation
The total approved surface area reaches 365,861 m², with 1,082 files. Despite the boost in new construction (+5.84%), there is concern over the drop in renovation, which fell by 12% to 99,805 m², representing only 28% of the total; a decade ago, it accounted for 40%.

In the words of the COAC president in Girona, Marc Riera: “Renovation must stop being the unfinished business”, stressing the need to promote it to improve the existing housing stock.
